The active ingredient in this medication is naproxen sodium which is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which is used to treat fever, minor arthritis, menstrual cramps, back ache, tooth ache and mild to moderate aches and pains including headaches.
It is available as 220mg of naproxen sodium which delivers 200mg of naproxen to the body and relief lasts up to 12 hours.
They are available as tablets, caplets, gel caps and liquid gels.
Dosage:
- Ages 12 and over – Take 1 tablet every 8 to 12 hours as needed. For the first dose you may take 2 tablets within the first hour. Do not take more tablets in 12 hours and do not take more than 3 tablets in 24 hours. The maximum daily dose is 660 mg.
- Should not be given to children under 12 years of age unless directed by a doctor.
- Should not be taken for more than 3 days for fever or 10 days for pain unless directed by your doctor.
Aleve should be taken with a full glass of water. Take with food to prevent an upset stomach.
Warnings and Precautions:
- Should not be taken if you have a peptic ulcer or bleeding disorder.
- If pregnant or breast feeding speak to your doctor before taking Aleve. In general, it should not be taken after the 20 week or pregnancy as it can prolong pregnancy and affect blood flow to the fetus.
- Long term use can cause kidney problems.
- It may also increase the risk of heart failure, heart attack and stroke.
- Should not be taken with other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.
- Increases the side effects to the stomach if taken with alcohol.
Possible side effects: Heartburn, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness, and stomach bleed.
Possible Allergy symptoms: Rash, wheezing, hives, skin reddening, and facial swelling.
