Obesity is a risk factor for many diseases like diabetes, heart disease, stroke, sleep apnea, dyslipidemia and many more. The initial approach to losing weight is lifestyle modification which means focusing on diet AND exercise. This must be done consistently over a long period to see the benefits.
Exercise increases metabolism in the body and can also decrease appetite.
Diet involves restricting calorie intake. The calorie intake should be less than the energy used for weight loss to occur. The calorie intake though restricted must be well balanced.
The total number of calories a person needs, the kind of exercise and how much exercise a person does in order to lose weight is patient specific and may depend on variables like:
- how much the person weighs
- health status of the person
- how active the person is
