Paxlovid – Antiviral treatment for Covid-19

Paxlovid is an antiviral prescription medication used to treat adults with mild to moderate Covid-19 who have had symptoms for 5 days or less and are at risk for developing severe Covid-19.

Some risk factors for developing severe Covid-19

Patients that are 50 years and older,

Patients that are obese,

Patients that smoke,

Patients with conditions like heart disease and diabetes,

How supplied:

-standard dose pack

-reduced dose pack (for patients with moderate renal impairment)

Standard Dose 300mg ; 100mg pack: In this pack, each dose consists of 3 tablets. 2 tablets of nirmatrelvir 150mg (300mg total) and 1 tablet of ritonavir 100mg. These 3 tablets are to be taken all together in the morning and again in the evening at the same time for 5 days.

Reduced Dose 150mg ; 100mg pack: In this pack, each dose consists of 2 tablets. 1 tablet of nirmatrelvir 150mg and 1 tablet of ritonavir 100mg. These 2 tablets are to be taken all together in the morning and again in the evening at the same time for 5 days.

Precautions:

Tell your doctor if you have any kidney or liver problems, if you have HIV 1, if you are pregnant or if you are on birth control.

Drug Interactions:

Paxlovid interacts with may commonly used drugs that can results in severe side effects. Some examples of these drugs are:

  • simvastatin
  • amiodarone
  • tamsulosin
  • phenytoin
  • sildenafil
  • carbamazepine
  • St. John’s Wort

It is very important to disclose all the drugs you are taking with your doctor including over the counter medication.

Some side effects of Paxlovid

  • Trouble breathing
  • Rash
  • Headache
  • Nausea
  • High blood pressure
  • Swelling lips, tongue, face
  • Painful mouth sores
  • Liver problems that may present with itchy skin, stomach pain, yellowing of skin and eyes e.t.c.
