Commonly known as ringworm as they can be round in nature, but not always. Usually affect the surface or just under the skin. Can also be found in the nails and in hair. They thrive in moist, warm areas.
Commonly Affected Areas:
- The Feet (athlete’s foot)
- The Groin (jock itch)
- The body
- The Scalp (common in children)
- The nails
Treatment:
- Wash daily thoroughly with soap and water
- Do not share clothing or towels if infected
- Dry shoes thoroughly before wearing
Fungal infections of the body, nails, athlete’s foot, and jock itch may be treated with over-the-counter medication. The other types should be looked at by your doctor.
Over-the-counter antifungal treatments:
- Clotrimazole cream, lotion, or solution
- Miconazole cream, powder, or lotion
- Terbinafine cream, gel, or spray
- Tolnaftate cream, gel, or powder
- Butenafine cream
- Undecylenic acid cream or liquid
Prescription antifungal treatments
Oral treatments:
- Azole antifungals: fluconazole, itraconazole, ketoconazole, voriconazole etc.
- Terbinafine
- Griseofulvin
Topical treatments:
- Econazole cream
- Ciclopirox cream, gel, or lacquer
