Dry skin occurs when the outer layer of the skin does not have or hold enough water.

Some causes of Dry Skin

  • Insufficient fluid intake
  • Thinning of the top layer of the skin
  • Smoking
  • Malnutrition
  • Over use of soap

Some symptoms of Dry Skin

  • Itching
  • Flaking skin
  • Cracked skin

Common treatments of Dry Skin

  • Drink at least 8 cups of water
  • Use a good moisturizer
  • Have a bath/wash with a gentle cleanser, bath oil or oatmeal bath
  • Hydrocortisone may be used for itching but must not be used for more than 1 week
